Can my flock eat that?!? This?!?

This may be a little off my usual path but seeing that this page is designed around being as informative and helpful as I possibly can, I think it belongs here. I love having my chickens and ducks to help break down my compost by aerating it and picking through. They often eat some of it, which cuts down on their food bill but can be dangerous!

So here it goes… What “human” foods can my bocks and quacks eat?

Disclaimer: there is no right way to raise your flock. Some people will agree with certain things and others won’t. I kind of like to leave it up to personal experience and preference. It never hurts to ask around either. Although there are foods that are absolutely no go’s for your chickens no matter who ya are!

I made a list of food that we deemed a risk to our girls. I made this list in efforts to give the girls more of a variety of food, more treats, and more natural vitamins from veggies all while picking through the compost.

Here is my list of no go’s!

  • Avocado
  • Rhubarb
  • Garlic
  • Anything with added sugar
  • Cooked food (such as anything out of a bag, box, or can (i.e. spam, tortilla chips, cheese, canned fruit))
  • Red meats
  • Beans
  • Alcohol
  • Dairy products
  • Raw or uncooked pasta or rice
  • Chocolate

Another safe suggestion: if you would not eat it, don’t give it to your birds to eat.

At no extra cost to us the chickens are benefiting from our excess food and kitchen scraps! I truly enjoy having chickens and ducks for more than just pets and egg producers!

Happy chicken (&duck) keeping!
