15 Things I Need To Know Before Making A Birth Plan

The day has finally arrived. The day I wasn’t sure I would ever find. The day I start mommy blogging. LOL what a weird thing. But as for someone that is all about sharing real life and keeping things open with you, I find that mommy blogging will become a more regular part of our conversations.

So if you don’t know already, SURPRISE! We are pregnant with our double rainbow baby. I am in the 5th ish month depending on when I finally get this finished and when you read this… 🙂 Baby Dantzler is expected around the end of winter 2024 and we are beyond excited for their arrival.

We are not finding out gender until the moment the OB hands them to us and we get to snuggle their sweet face.

As someone that had a high risk first trimester we have been for several ultrasounds and been able to heart baby’s heart beat regularly. Growing a human being is an incredible and crazy wild adventure. Now that we are past what some consider to be the hardest trimester we are no longer high risk. PHEW! But we do still have a few risk factors given our history of two losses in the past and weird hormone levels. Sooooo here are 15 questions that I have to have an answer for before I can finalize my birth plan and have peace of mind knowing that everything I plan for is in my control while a lot of the process is out of my control but still with a support team around me.

Comment below with any questions, points, tips for first time mamas, and/or questions you had for your OB that you didn’t find internet answers for.

  1. Does the OB have a suggested birth plan for me based on my history? Is there anything not recommended right off the bat?
  2. How long over due is it safe for me and baby to be before an induction needs to happen?
  3. What if baby is breech? Can I continue with a natural brith or are there policies in place that require other action? Can we try to naturally flip baby?
  4. What happens if I have to have a c-section? Walk me through the process, including recovery.
  5. Does the hospital allow for golden hour? If so, what all is included in it?
  6. If wanted, will I have access to a tub or some form of water to birth in?
  7. Will I need to stop any medications or supplements that I am currently taking at any point in the remainder of my pregnancy? What about while I am in the hospital? Do I bring my own or will it be provided?
  8. What are my options for breastfeeding support right away after birth? Will their be someone that is able to consult/ help me as a first time mom?
  9. Can we practice wireless/intermitten monitoring during labor? Or is there a policy that requires constant monitoring?
  10. Are there recommended classes by the OB or hospital for first time parents to take prior to labor and delivery? What about post delivery?
  11. As I near our due date, are there any work restrictions that I should observe to help have a safe delivery?
  12. What kind of foods and drinks should I be consuming to help me reach my birth plan goal?
  13. As we get close to meeting our baby, is there anything in our home that needs to be taken of before hand? Things that babies cannot be exposed to until they are older.
  14. How can we prepare for the baby’s size best? Are they smaller or larger than the average babe at this point? Does the OB think they will fit premie or newborn sizes?
  15. If baby is male, what do we need to know about the first litttle bit of their existance? What about if they are female? Are there differences, beside the obvious, in how to care for a brand new baby of either gender?

Alright mamas, that is what I have and the thoughts I haven’t asked or had answered yet… We still have some time before meeting sweet baby Dantzler, but I am a planner and want to be able to know as much as possible before heading into L&D.

Be sure to reach out if you need anything ❤

Be well!
